After 5 tradeshow

I realize that I haven’t mentioned anything about the tradeshow last week. It was a tiring 5 hours on our feet, but I think everyone had fun and we introduced our new GreenGoat initiative.

As always, there was great food it was nice to be so close to Unique Coffee Service who kept us awash in specialty teas, and MCC Industrial seemed to be willing to try and recycle my old Roomba. Robertson Brown Health Services was there as well (they have such a lovely website). It was good to see so many people from Guelph, it seemed that half of the people there knew Trudy, or GiantGoat.

I think we’ll be back next year.

How can I use RSS?

RSS is Really Simple Syndication, and the idea is to have a program (your RSS reader) check the websites you visit regularly for updates, and display them all in one list.

Here are some of the things I use it for:

  • Rarely updated blogs: Rands in Repose is a nerd-management blog that publishes one long well thought out post maybe every month or so. My RSS reader dutifully checks his RSS feed every day, and when there’s a new post, adds it to my queue.
  • Skimability: We don’t use a lot of Microsoft specific technologies, so I rarely read a full article from Global Nerdy (a blog about Microsoft tech-community in Toronto). I like to know what they’re up to, but I doubt I’d ever visit his site regularly.
  • Tracking: The neat thing about any new standard is seeing what neat new things people use it for. My name is too common for vanity Google searches to turn up anything useful, but Google alerts allows me to track mentions of “GiantGoat” or incoming links, here’s a feed of new people linking to us. This is how I keep track of random large goat activity.

RSS is a technology just like HTML, in that many different programs can display it, I use Google Reader to manage my feeds, because they’re mostly work related and I’m rarely far from a computer at work. But I’m eager to try the other end of the spectrum and get a Kindle from Amazon, and have my RSS feeds mailed to me periodically. You can also use dedicated programs for RSS feeds (there’s possibly one on your phone) or add them to Microsoft Outlook.

Coop at GiantGoat

Well my time is up here are GiantGoat and I got to say it was a great experience. Coop students don’t really know what a place is going to like when they first get to a job. Sometimes you are considered a lower employee that doesn’t get much in the way of real work or on the other hand you could go to a place where you get to do actual work that contributes to both your learning and the company’s products. I would have to say the experience here at GiantGoat has been the latter for the most part. Sure there have been times where I’ve had to do the grunt work that no one else wanted to do but I also got to work on major projects and contribute them. I would have to say that this is a great place to find what working in web development is really about and I know I have taken a lot away from this job. Continue with the great work GiantGoat and keep hiring us coops as you know we are pretty awesome.
