Sculptris – The Photoshop of 3D Modelling

Filed under: fun — Dave @ 5:15 pm

Justin: While reading some forums last night I found an interesting thread about this new 3D sculpting application that was just released called Sculptis. It is the side project of Tomas Pettersson, a computer science student from Sweden.

Despite being only an alpha version, it was quite impressive! Weighing in at a mere 3 mb, its incredible how much fun it is to play around with your virtual ball of clay. Similar to Photoshop’s tool set of different paint brushes and gradients, there are tools to pinch, mould, flatten, inflate etc.

I might update later with some of my work. Perhaps a 3D goat?

Google opens app store, Dave is excited

Lately Justin and Owen have taken most of the interesting development work away from me (which is why you’ll often get me on the phone if you call us). So I’m especially excited by Google’s new application store, since it’s a great place to put a couple of ideas that we’ve had to shelve because we weren’t sure how to monetize them.

The bulk of our work will still be bringing content and databases to the web, and details like accessibility — in fact there’s the alarming possibility that I’ll be speaking at The Aiming for Accessibility Conference in June.

Government Funding in 2010 – talk by Dave Reynolds at the GTO PTP

Filed under: events — Trudy @ 2:37 pm

Dave Reynolds of INAC Services Inc spoke to the GTO PTP (Guelph Technology Organization) last night about government funding in 2010. INAC is a firm that assists companies in finding the right funding match and of course application development – and well  – this route is time consuming and sometimes help even at a fee is a good thing, 80% of approved funding is better than $0 for example.

The turnout was good as always with the audience representing diverse technological businesses such as the University of Guelph (Business Development Office and Co-op), Agricultural Marketing, Digital Signs, Scientific equipment, Internet technologies and more.

Key take aways about funding applications:

  • persistence
  • patience
  • speak the funding language in your applications – if they want to see risk talk about risk,
  • understand what the applications require before filling them out – go after the right funding for your company
  • put time into understanding the details or you may have wasted your time (if your new hire can not be hired before the application is approved you need to know that – perhaps you can use them as a subcontractor until approval comes etc.) and
  • be able to financially back your own ventures anyway (as funding notoriously comes through not at the time you need it and/or  if your developing technology can only be build with funding maybe the business plan is off — funding is never a sure thing).

Interesting Note: I have heard this before – several well established companies in Guelph are surprised when they find other well established companies in Guelph whom they have never know about and could have used (and hopefully will now us) their products and services — this happened again last night — hmm.. I see a gap here that needs filling!

Congratulations to BumpTop

Details are still coming out but it looks like BumpTop was acquired by Google for a number in the 10′s of millions. As the kind of boring old fogey who still uses a command prompt, I never got into the product, but I met some of the people behind it a couple of years ago, and they’re great people. I run into Farhan Thawar periodically at democamps, and this is a great win for the Canadian venture capital industry in general and obviously Extreme Venture Partners specifically.
BumpTop is still available for free for one more week
