Owen after 4 months

[Owen is our co-op student from the University of Guelph, every so often I make other people blog too --Dave]

Well it has been almost four months here at GiantGoat and I’m excited to continue working here for the rest of the summer. Work here is interesting and I have had many opportunities to learn new skills as well as contribute to new projects and ideas.

I’ve worked on many projects during my time here and one that I am especially proud of is http://www.shopeteer.ca . I did a lot of work on that site and am very pleased by the way it turned out.

I have also been given lots of other responsibilities here at GiantGoat. I have taken charge of our online marketing and Google ads and by doing so I have increased traffic to our site and hope to continue to improve on our click through rate.

It’s exciting to be a part of this great place and hope to continue to witness and take part in all of the great things that GiantGoat does.

DemoCampGuelph13

Filed under: democamp, events, where are they now — Dave @ 4:20 pm

After Rob the lawyer spoke, WeCreate’s Lozzal was up. Avery gave a purely command line demo of Bup, which brings rsync-like goodesn, and redundancy to the backups that you aren’t making because you’re braver than I am. Thermoduino was a cool hardware hack (even if 8:27 was uneventful), David from Sentex also showed off Marvell‘s SheevaPlug which tempted me to port my side project to it.

All of our co-opetition was there, so I missed a few of the demos like fluid.io, but congradulations go to Kevin Jinde, formerly of VL Interactive, who’s now working at The University of Guelph. Shoutouts to DemoCampGuelph’s newest sponsor, and thanks to all the current and former GiantGoat employees who were there (and as always, better audience members than I was): Adnan, Christine, John, Danielle, Justin & Owen.

Events & StartupDrinks

Filed under: events — Dave @ 2:59 pm

Next week, I’ll be at the Guelph Young Professionals Network meetup, Tuesday the 13th from 5-7, at McCabe’s Irish Pub and Grill (9 Wyndham Street North, Guelph).

We’ll probably all be at DemoCampGuelph on Wednesday at eBar.

Better late than never, last week I managed to make it to StarupDrinks, shout-outs to Graham, Jonathan, Julie, Sonya and Christine of I Am My Ambition, Alex of FightTube, and Brendan of DSGN network
and also to esentire‘s UI man, DJ Phat Albert who I ran into.

I didn’t make it to last night’s Waterloo Region Web Design & Technology Group April Meetup because I’m experimenting with car-pooling which is throwing my schedule out of whack, but Danielle tells me it was great.

Hopefully I’ll see you all soon.

Guelph Chamber of Commerce Trade Show April 7

GiantGoat had a display booth at the Cutten Club last night for the Chamber of Commerce Tabletop Trade Show. Good amount of displays, not so large of an attendance and the interaction amongst the participants was fair.

Justin had a good time, even won the draw from the University of Guelph Co-op – nice hoodie Justin! We caught Justin here setting up.

TIP FOR YOU: If you are interested in a co-op you should look into the SBIP (Small Business Internship Program) from Industry Canada if accepted you will get 75% co-op salary paid for you.

Met some current clients, pick up several good leads and had a chance to have a pre-meet with a potential new client we are set to meet shortly for a web project – so all in all a pretty good night for us!

Shout out for all the good food that was available!
